The first vismigging season in the Soar Valley got off to a brilliant start this morning when two very closely following flocks of Golden Plover totalling around 500 birds went NNW just after 07.30 this morning.
The aim of this mornings session was to get our eye/ears in ready for the start of the season proper next week… so this was almost a pre-season friendly. Dave and I also wanted to work out local movements and directions of migration. A few Swift were definitely going South but seemed to feed over the main lake then the Nature Reserve lake before leaving on a SE heading. A few Sand Martin were also off South as well as a large hirundine flock trying to confuse things over the lakes.
There seemed also to have been a small fall of migrants too, plenty of mainly smart juvenile Chiffchaff but also up to four Willow Warbler… all four were singing at times too, interesting behaviour as this year hasn’t been too good for WW in the area.
