Casper Lad!

Great news is that Ken Loach’s masterpiece Kes is getting a long-awaited cinema re-release. Based on Barry Hines’ book a A Kestrel For A Knave this film perfectly sums up what life was like back in Hoyland when we were growing up.

Barry Hines was brought up in Hoyland Common and taught at my school Kirk Balk before I started there. Plenty of characters are instantly recognisable… Mr Sugden, played by the late, great Brian Glover was based on our games teacher ‘Rocket’ Ronnie Hallam.

The other classic scene is when Mr Farthing (Barry Hines?) goes to watch Billy exercise his Kestrel.

If you’ve never seen the film… go! If like me you’ve never seen it at the cinema… go!
