Saturday afternoon, Phil Claricoates, Mark Ledger and I headed round to The Turnbull Ground for a bit of Northern Premier League action as lowly Whitby Town took on Play-off contenders Northwich Victoria. £8 admission was pretty good as were the pie and peas at £2.30… I was so impressed I splashed out a bit more on gravy. Northern boys love gravy!
A good selection of flags with the classic ‘We’ve Got Better Chip Shops’ in the middle… can’t argue with that!
The match got off to a great start with Whitby playing some neat passing football and quickly putting Northwich under pressure. That pressure told on 9 minutes when Tom Portas finished a slick move from 18 yards.
Despite dominating for the rest of the half, following the sending off of the Northwich full-back Disney, Whitby couldn’t capitalise on all the pressure and it was no surprise when Chris Budrys equalised for The Vics.
In the second half Northwich’s class started to tell and the Whitby faithful started getting edgy. Jeff Smith put Whitby 2-1 up but you still felt the tension among the fans was spreading on to the pitch as they never looked comfortable.
Thankfully Whitby held on for the win, my third in three visits, a win that takes Whitby out of the relegation zone. Let’s hope I’m not a talisman for the club as it looks like Blyth Spartans will be playing there next season if the Seasiders stay up. Oh well, that’s a good weekend trip.
A bit of 70s style film taken using the 8mm iPhone app and edited in the ReelDirector app for iPhone.
