This post could easily have been called ‘fuckin’ ‘ell ref!’
After a visit to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park an ahead of school reunion, Leigh and I headed off for a football fix (well I needed the fix). Over the years I’ve taken to Leigh to some ‘classic’ grounds HNK Dubrovnik must be her highlight, so today we headed for the hilltop village of Emley and home of AFC Emley.
AFC Emley now ply their trade in the Northern Counties East League Div. 1, I say now because I think the less said about the Wakefield Emley debacle the better… another crap decision by the NPL and the FA. Reborn the club remain loyally if not brilliantly well supported and are back at their spiritual home The Miners Welfare Ground. A real classic three sided Northern ground where the adjacent cricket pitch is fenced off for the football season. The ground is also on the shadow of one of Yorkshire’s great buildings – the Emley Moor TV Mast.
The game was a pretty scrappy affair with most players, especially Grimsby Borough captain Shaun Baker seemed most committed to abusing the referee, who I thought had a good game. Emley were pretty sharp for the off though with Ashley Flynn slotting home after two minutes. For some reason though they then took their eye off the ball and it was no surprise when Grimsby equalised through Fanthorpe just before half-time.
Grimsby came out strongest after the break and added to their lead with a well taken goal from John Waugh. Emley did try to up the pressure but made life difficult for themselves when the ref finally tired of the abuse and sent right back Thornton off for a second bookable offence.
£4 in and £1 for a programme wasn’t a bad deal. As we’d eaten earlier I can’t comment on the pies… over even say if there were any!
