Azorean Yellow-legged Gull

Anyone who knows me, knows I just love Gulls… well no, I don’t really. Bloody Tip Rats. However I do know that Gulls are worth looking at, especially when there’s an insurance tick only a few miles away. With that in mind I joined The Beast, Chris Lythall, Dave Mack et al for a look at the Azorean Yellow-legged Gull at Rutland Water.

First impressions were how small it seemed when lined up with Lesser Black-backed Gulls and Common Gulls. It appeared mid way between the two. The next impression was the mantle colour in real life. Not as dark as I’d expected from seeing photos of them and close to Yellow-legged in colour, if not a touch lighter. The stand out feature though is the smoky head, very distinctive.

There was also a cracking adult Caspian Gull in the pre-roost.
