Otter Than Hell

Embarked on an ill-fated trip to Aberdeen and Northumberland this week with Colin and Steve. We should have known it was doomed when the M6 was closed causing us to divert up the A1 and A66.

Arriving at Aberdeen there was no sign of the Harlequin Duck despite a number of visiting and local birders scouring the area. Dipper is always nice to see but I don’t normally travel 450 miles to year tick one. This Otter though did provide some entertainment and did allow me to film it on the iPhone.

After finally admitting defeat we tried to salvage something from the trip by going for the Black Scoter at Cheswick in Northumberland. Again despite much searching we were again bitterly disappointed.

Needle In A Gaystack

The award for top texting mistake this week goes to super twitcher and self-styled ‘kid’ lister Dave Mack. Taking a punt, Dave had driven through the night to Black Dog, just north of Aberdeen, to tick a subbie Velvet Scoter the American White-winged Scoter. I got a text this morning with a bit of description of the weather, wet and windy I think it said, plenty of waves and a distant Surf Scoter. The end of the text just about summed up sea-watching for the White-winged Scoter… like looking for a needle in a gaystack. Now I don’t know what kind of porn Mr Mack has been watching but he really needs to cut out that Coconut Ice and Cinder Toffee off Donny Market.

It only takes a small prick eh?

I couldn’t find a song to match so you’ll have to make do with The Velvelettes and the classic 1964 Motown hit Needle In A Haystack.
